Electronic Cigarette and Passive Vaping

Electronic Cigarette and Passive Vaping A new peer-reviewed study, just published in the prestigious specialized magazine Nicotine and Tobacco Research, deals with the so-called "passive steam". That is the danger that the aerosol of the electronic cigarette can have for third parties. And once again proves that vaping releases liquid droplets that evaporate within a few seconds, with a negligible impact on air quality even in enclosed spaces. The study, entitled "Characterization of the Spatial and Temporal Dispersion Differences Between Exhaled and Cigarette Mist and Cigarette Smoke", was conducted by a team of European researchers and Fontem Ventures, the Imperial Brand branch that deals with electronic cigarettes and compared the emissions of ecig and conventional cigarettes. In practice some volunteers have smoked and fumed in a closed environment at different distances from a heated manikin and in different ventilation conditions. Then the concentration and size distribution of the particles near the manikin were measured.

The results are in line with those found in previous studies. For both products, electronic cigarette and tobacco, the concentration of particles after each expiration was in the same order of magnitude. The difference, however, is that in the case of ecig the concentration of particles returned within seconds to initial values. On the other hand, with the tobacco cigarette, the concentration increased with the subsequent expiration of smoke and returned to the initial levels only after 30-45 minutes. This temporal variation depended on the ventilation of the room, which was instead indifferent to electronic cigarettes. Moreover, the measurement of the particle size showed that the ones in the aerosol of the ecig were smaller than those of the smoke and therefore evaporated almost immediately, without having to be removed thanks to the ventilation.
So, concludes the study, "there are significant differences between the emissions of cigarettes and electronic and conventional ones. The particles contained in the aerosol of the ecig are liquid droplets that evaporate rapidly; those of conventional smoking are much more stable and remain in the environment
