What is PG (Propylene Glycol)?
PG, or propylene glycol, is generally regarded as safe and non-toxic, and is widely used in a range of consumer products.
PG has many useful properties, including being a humectant (which means it helps retain moisture), a preservative, and a solvent. Thanks to these characteristics, it’s used in various industries and products such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, pet and human food, food flavorings, and many other items. It’s also easy to vaporize, which is why it’s used in asthma inhalers, theatrical fog machines, and in the e-liquids of electronic cigarettes.
What is VG (Vegetable Glycerin, Glycerol)?
VG, or vegetable glycerin/glycerol, is more viscous than PG. Like PG, it is non-toxic and is generally recognized as safe for food use.
VG also has a wide range of uses due to its sweetness, its role as a solvent and preservative, and its ability to help retain moisture.
It is used in pharmaceuticals (such as cough syrups, ointments, and creams), cosmetics (such as hand creams and toothpaste), as a humectant in baked goods, and as a solvent for flavorings and food colorings.
Key Differences Between PG and VG for Vapers
Based on their chemistry and uses, there are many similarities between PG and VG, but also several key differences. These differences are important when determining how much PG and VG you want in your vape liquid.
